Hi guys.. hope you are all well! I just happened across this announcementMacGyver is getting a new movie??!!! And.. I missed this announcement back in Oct 2015.. MacGyver the tv show is getting a reboot??!! There's so many reboots and remakes lately.. I wonder when it will be SMK's turn?! What do you all think - do you want an SMK to comeback? If yes, do you prefer a reboot (reimagining the show to bring it up to date with plots and context)?? .. a remake (recreating the old show)?? or.. an update (with BB and KJ and where the characters are now)?? I've gotta admit.. I have no interest in watching aging BB fight crime (please forgive me and I'm sorry if this offends tried and true BB fans!) I think I could handle a reboot - if it was with updated with new actors and contemporary context.. however.. The one thing they would need to do as perfectly as the first version of smk would be the gradual, subtle, well thought out romance progression without all the superficial developments and plot twists that seem to be a mainstay of shows these days.. actually now I think about it - I'm not confident this could be made now.. But.. I would be extremely happy to be proven wrong on this What do you all think? Bye!

I'm not sure I'd like a modern reboot of SMK. Back then, international problems centered around the Cold War, and the modern international problem is terrorism. I don't think a spy show that centers around hunting down terrorists would be as light and humorous as SMK is. It would be a completely different show.
Then, there's all the controversy in recent years over how much government agencies like the NSA are watching ordinary citizens. (If you're out there guys, I'd dearly love to know whether you actually heard us and cleared up that Skype problem when we were playing three-location D&D a few years ago. If not, that was a pretty funny coincidence, and if so, whatever file you have on us should be pretty entertaining. We certainly try.) But, that can be pretty dark stuff. An ordinary person these days might have more issues helping spies than Amanda did in the 80s.
Although my brother, my friends, and I have a list of fun services that we think the NSA should consider providing that would genuinely help the general population and would greatly improve public relations: intercepting and deleting the embarrassing e-mail someone just sent before the other person sees it ("Yes, sir, don't worry. This happens all the time. Just remember that you should think before writing, no matter how angry you are."), telling people what happened at the party last night after they got drunk and letting them know if they did something truly embarrassing before their friends tell them ("Yes, sir, you did have a lamp shade on your head, but the cute blonde you were talking to thought it was funny, so it wasn't too bad."), giving them archived copies of important files that they accidentally deleted or forgot to save before the computer crashed ("It's no problem, but you really should back up your documents more often, ma'am."), providing them with phone numbers that they've lost ("It's 555-2882, and his last name is Hansen, with an 'e'. We noticed that you didn't write it correctly on the note you scribbled."), telling them if their newest crush is worth it or if they have a secret dark side ("Skip this one, ma'am. He's got a prison record. You should try your cousin's friend, George. Our intelligence indicates that he's been asking about you."), etc. Although if the NSA found our ideas interesting, we would like to point out that it could lead to additional job creation, and we thought of an entire advertising campaign that we like to call "NSA PSAs." They would be both fun and educational and would feature a kind of friendly-looking Eye of Sauron logo with the slogan, "Big Brother is watching . . . out for you!"
Actually, maybe there is still some humor in the situation. Besides, maybe the Agency is more above that kind of thing than other organizations, just like they're fundamentally against assassinations, as they say in The Triumvirate. I don't think that they really went into that kind of thing in Get Smart, either. CONTROL was always on the side of "niceness." But, again, that's an older show, and there isn't a lot of that kind of humor in modern shows. SMK wouldn't be SMK without the humor.
I've thought about what a show featuring the next generation at the Agency would be like, with Lee and Amanda in some kind of senior positions, like maybe the heads of an expanded Q Department instead of just the Q Bureau. If they were handling unusual cases, that might get them away from the more typical modern terrorist problems, and that might help.
But, I'd also like the idea of a remake set during the Cold War because that might help promote the mindset that inspired the original humor.

I don't think I could watch anybody else do Lee and Amanda... I don't really want to watch BB and KJ try to redo it now either. The one thing I wouldn't mind is a sort of next generation SMK twist. Maybe BB and KJ could be in it, in the background sort of, retired (mostly) and it could be their kids in the action? Someone wrote a series of fanfiction like that (His Eye is on the Sparrow) and I think that could work. But they would have to be very clever about it otherwise it would totally flop. I am happy enough with this fun little SMK Rabbit hole we have all created though. Our imaginations are active enough to keep me busy...

I mentioned this over on the thread for X-Files. Watching it made me wonder why they didn't do this for SMK. X-Files however was fairly recent. When they were doing the reruns for SMK on various channels that would have been the time for a return to the Agency. But these reboots, remakes, and revisits can be very tricky and don't always work. I'm liking X-Files a lot right now, but no one else could be Scully and Mulder, but Anderson and Duchovny. For us, and other true fans, Lee and Amanda are iconic and no one would seemingly be able to do them justice, but BB and KJ, at least I don't think so. I think BB once said that too much time had passed to try to start it up again. I'm a Star Trek fan and I know that the movies have been hit or miss. There has been much of it that I liked and some I cringed at a little.
I agree that something would have to change about the spy stuff and I also agree that people no longer have the patience for a slowly developing and truly lasting relationship that happened with Lee and Amanda. Sometimes I think these reboots are just rushed without any thought to the original audience and fans and how they are going to receive them.

yeah I think it would be really interesting to see how a show messes with current events and brings out the humour.. but yeah I would never want to see anyone else actually playing Lee and Amanda.. but lee and Amanda like characters I think I could cope with ..
whooo I'll get over to the x files!

I could never, ever see anyone else as Lee & Amanda. No way. As much as I'd love to see them together again, I am also not sure that Scarecrow and Mrs. King would work for them. I too, am watching The X-Files reboot, and I am LOVING it!!!! BUT... DD and GA are younger than BB and KJ and The X-Files ended a lot less years ago than SMK did. I watched a recent interview with GA and DD and Gillian said that although they wound up slipping back into their old rolls, when the scene they were filming called for running... it was an effort and not as easy as it was all those years ago. LOL. It was pretty funny. I don't know that BB and KJ could fight crime the way that they used to, but I would LOVE to see them together in some kind of Hallmark movie or something like that. Jeez, even a recent picture of them together might make us fans happy

It's a no from me for much of the reasons jestress outlines. I just don't think they could do it justice....I mean the plot holes are part of the fun. And quite frankly the Cold War seems terribly tame compared to the threats we face today. Leave as it so I can wallow in nostalgia of simpler times.

Like the rest of you, I'm not sure I could see it either. SMK worked best in that era. Yes, the threats have changed a lot. I did have an idea for a reboot a couple weeks ago. Maybe I was bored, but this popped into my head.
I'm assuming Lee and Amanda have at least one child together, maybe two by now. About the same age as Lee and Amanda or close. While the son could take after his dad, it might be interesting if they had a daughter who takes the lead instead. The girl who becomes the 'loner.' She's a good blend of Lee and Amanda, but more Lee. Then bring in a quirky guy to take on Amanda's old role (doesn't have to be a stay at home dad, but that could work too). Quirkier than Amanda. The two would clash, but eventually work out. Bruce and Kate could still take on occasional appearances as consultants for the agency. I could see Lee nudging the daughter toward the guy, the way Billy nudged Lee toward Amanda. Maybe one of them could take on more of a Billy-type role too, but I'm not sure BB or KJ would accept that for the amount of hours it would require. I could also visualize Lee addressing the agency about the latest threat, with his daughter being among the top agents. Something like this might be interesting, but there's no telling how long it would last or whether BB and KJ would do it. I'd watch it for them. There are already similar shows out there with strong women and quirky men. Sort of made me think of the Mentalist, which has run its course.

I know that I'm late to this discussion, but maybe if they used Lee and Amanda's child(ren) as the main characters. We assume they had at least one. After all Lee's parents were spies, so it would only be fitting that their child was one too.

I really hope they don't. I think a lot of what made SMK special would be lost in today's TV formats.
For one thing, the family friendly lack of violence etc is an unheard of concept on today's television. There would be way more gore, especially when they dealt with people like Addi Birol or the mobsters on Life Of The Party.
I think it would be also much harder to keep it light-hearted because the nature of espionage has changed so much since 9/11. Cold War bad guys did a lot more killings with secrecy and poisons. Today seems to be explosions and the gross stuff we saw from 2014 and 2015 that I really don't want to think about.
Also today's writers don't seem to write romance as well-paced as SMK did. We'd probably instead get Lee & Amanda super attracted to each other but driving each other nuts in an overdone roller coaster that would take the charm away from what we loved.
And the obvious -- there just simply are no other Lee & Amanda besides Bruce and Kate.

Best re-boot I've ever seen was Battlestar Galactica. But that was SO different than the original. I think with the right writers/director/actors, they could pull off an SMK reboot... but I doubt it would get done very well... or at least not the way I'd like it done - ha!
