Yeah--I guess giving an update might give me a bit more of a boost. I'd been painstakingly transcribing and trying to proof/perfect a scene--or even just a chunk of dialogue--before moving on... and it was slow going. I'd made it through about a third of the episode this way, then I did the beta-ing for Iwsod, which seemed so much easier--taking what was already transcribed and proofing it... So... then I decided to do just a first run-through (or two or three for complex dialogue) and then come back and proof it myself. I finished the first run-through last weekend. Woot! (Squeeeeeing crazily over the tag scene... my ep is Dead Men Leave No Trails... you know what I'm talking about...!!!...) Now I get to beta myself, before sending for outside beta. Some of my scenes are crazy though--little dialogue and lots of camera shot changes and action. There's two scenes in particular like that--where Sallee follows Amanda through the park, and the final ballroom scene. LOL. Enough rambling. Transcribing is FUN, but not easy. And not quick. But, I think, worth it. Depending on how long it takes me to beta myself, I might take on another episode... maybe...

Has anyone accessed Season 3 transcripts on Petra's site?? It won't let me open it.. I am really hoping that some of them are actually completed and it's just not 'open' to viewing yet..

Good thinking!!! yes sometimes we need to play these little tricks on ourselves to keep the motivation up! That's how I do it.. I've got to feel I'm progressing or I get demotivated. Keep up the great work!!!

I just finished transcribing Any Number Can Play and am looking for a beta as I have lost all perspective!
It's a great episode, very character-driven but because it's mid-season 4, some people may want to avoid it.
Please PM if you can help (and I'm happy to help anyone else!)

Hi everyone! Lots of "familiar faces" here. I intended to post here the other day, but life got in the way and I guess I never made it back. Oops!
As some of you might know, I've offered help with transcribing episodes for Operation Sandstorm. Currently (and for FAR TOO LONG) I'm working on The Wrong Way Home, and it's finally ready for a beta--is anyone up for the task?
Also, I've been reading through the thread and there has been some discussion on how much to include in the descriptions, and I wanted to chime in with my own 2 cents. As has been mentioned, I also prefer for transcripts to leave out interpretations--so long as it's in favor of of the FACTS. IWSOD gave a great example of saying she'll put in something like "Amanda smiled" instead of "Amanda was happy," which I think is a great way to go. BUT I also prefer a fair amount of description since the dialogue, in itself, can often omit the very nature of the scene. Everyone in the cast, from Kate and Bruce to many of the guest stars, put such effort into bringing the characters to life, it often doesn't explain what's really going on in the scene to simply leave it at the dialogue. So often, there's a whole underlying subtext that can't possibly be interpreted by simply reading the words. (And besides that, we're lucky in our fandom to also have a lot of the scripts available, which often can be reliable references to the dialogue in the finished product.)
Nuances can be so critical to the way we interpret a scene--but I also agree heartily that it's for the reader to interpret it. I try to include as many nuances as I feel appropriate, but I try very hard to do that by describing the facts of the scene (smiling, lowering voice, rolling eyes) rather than ascribing feelings to the characters. --For the most part anyway. Sometimes I feel it's appropriate to say, for instance, that a character said something sadly, sometimes that's a safe assumption and it saves a lot of explanation. But I do strive to keep that to a minimum, since how do I know they were sad? You know? Like what did they DO that made me say that?
Personally, my whole reason for reading a transcript in the first place is to be able to "watch" the episode without actually seeing it. Or to catch things that I might not have thought about if I were taking it all in with my eyes and ears. It can be a great way of slowing down and truly processing what was going on in the episode. They can also be a great reference to the ORDER that things happened. Have you ever tried to write a fanfic with a good, reliable transcript to work from? They can be a lifesaver! Let alone that sometimes it can make a huge difference to remember how a scene looked, as far as jogging our memory goes.
But that really is just my OPINION. And despite how strongly I just spoke about it, it is also a very humble one at that. Everyone is entitled to their own preferences. I'm just grateful that transcripts are being done at all! Like IWSOD said, as long as the dialogue is correct, we have some room to move.

Hiya! Thanks for the pick me up. The last 2 weeks have been abnormally busy for me--it seems I'm no exception to the "month of August slump." But things are slowing down a bit again, so that's good for the transcribing work. How about you (all)?

Transcribing-wise I've been distracted, but I'm: - partway through beta-ing Any Number Can Play for Learjet
- done my first run-through of J. Edgar's Ghost--need to "beta" it myself before I send it out for beta
- ditto Fast Food For Thought
- when that's all done I can start on Stemwinder I and II -- wheee...
If you still need a beta, I can take one on after I done ANCP. (Though, ideally, I'd like to get my own "beta-ing" done too before I take on something else. I guess I just need to step back from memes for a while!!!)

Triumvirate is done. Will need a beta unless KC has time (no pressure KC). Will be starting Unfinished Business when I'm back from my holiday. But I would probably have time to do Wrong Way Home before that which would free up the Mistress to meme and finish ANCP?? If you want,KC?

Hey, Learjet--fine by me. You take WWH and I can take on TT for you after ANCP and (hopefully) getting JEG and FFFT closer to needing beta...

Hello, ladies. So, just for clarification's sake, you'd be willing to beta TWWHome for me, Learjet? If so, let me know and we can swap e-mails. No hurry and no pressure. Actually, I'd be willing and able to beta Triumvirate now, if you want (again, no pressure). Or if you would like for me to beta it ALSO--I don't know about you, but I personally like to send my transcripts through the wringer before send them to Petra--if you'd like to send it out to more than one beta. Either way, just let me know. I'll check back again soon.
