jestress was debating about rugby shirts after iwsod was posting about Lee's shirt on the Mata(i) Hari II and whether it was similar to a polo shirt. I agree with KC that the fabric is usually thicker than a polo shirt.  That oracle ( wikipedia) states: It usually has short sleeves, though long sleeves are common as well. Rugby shirts have a buttoned opening at the top, in a similar style to polo shirts but with a stiffer collar. Modern rugby shirts often have a very small collar so as to provide less material for a potential tackler to latch onto (even though such an action is illegal in a game). Rugby shirts traditionally have rubber buttons so that they would, if pulled on in a game, come undone rather than pop off...The rugby shirt has, in numerous cultures, become a popular fashion item.It also notes the increased use of skin-tight versions as it's harder to hang on to during a tackle. (Does anyone find that attractive?? I don't) Polo shirts on the other hand: is a form of shirt with a collar, a placket with typically two or three buttons, and an optional pocket. All three terms may be used interchangeably. Polo shirts are usually made of knitted cloth (rather than woven cloth), usually piqué cotton or, less commonly, silk, merino wool, or synthetic fibers. A dress-length version of the shirt is called a polo dress
My experience is that they are thinner and, as KC stated, the collars are the same colour as the rest of the shirt (unlike a rugby shirt that has a white collar). But I've seen striped ones as well. And they're not skin-tight generally. Also called golf or tennis shirts. Quite a lot of people wear them to work around here, if they're not in a suit/smart shirt kind-of-job. In fact, kids in Australia often where them to school, with the school badge or name embroidered on. They don't need to be ironed (a huge plus IMHO).

Agree with your analysis LearJet. It really looks like a rugby shirt to me. Polo shirts were more tailored and lighter. Would like to see Lee in a modern rugby shirt!

Yes maybe the main difference is the ever present white colour on the rugby shirt,
and never pockets on a rugby shirt but sometimes polo shirt..
I was wondering what they are called in the US since I figured they were originally an English thing - for Americans they may lump them all together under the term 'polo shirt' - I think Lee's shirt deserves a name all of it's own..
How about dreamy shirt? ummm.. drool-y shirt? Pretty boy shirt? ahhh Big Fella shirt!

@ learjet agreed! Lee alone can make the shirt swoony! Sorry kiwismh.. but I gotta agree with learjet, imaging Lee in all blacks uniform is just... wrong for my hero superswoony fantasy! but I imagine it's the same for you imaging him in wallabies uniform! haaa.. |

There's also the question of professional rugby team uniform versus a rugby shirt that Joe Public wears... I was referring to the latter...
(Referring to the former can I just say that it burns me to see many top teams wearing Canterbury jerseys, but the All Blacks wearing Adidas.)

That might be true. There are probably other Americans who, like me, wouldn't know the difference between the two. Come to think of it, that kind of cream-colored long sleeve shirt that Lee wore in Remembrance of Things Past, the one with the big insignia on the left side, was a similar style of shirt, wasn't it? |

Yes, Lee would like very swoon-worthy in a modern rugby shirt. The Aussie green would complement his eyes, but then again black goes with everything and transitions from casual to formal, day to night, very easily without the need for any confusing wardrobe changes, eh?
Agree with you LearJet, over-muscled rugby players are not attractive. Cricket is a much more civilised game, and the players are better looking too. Would like to see Lee in one of these shirts!

Just have to say - that was a Springbok rugby jersey, not a Wallaby jersey. Allegiance to one'srugby and cricket teams never change, even you move. Especially cricket teams. And I also prefer the "look" of a cricket player. Oh, for the days when I had time to watch a 5 day test from start to finish. Are you going to any of the World Cup games, kiwismh ? Oh, and Lee would be wearing this

Doh! So embarrassed I didn't notice the difference between Aussie and S.A. uniform - a thousand apologies LearJet.  Yes, I wish I had time to laze around at the cricket but sadly job and house renovations keep me fully occupied. I remember with fondness younger days when I could take a whole day or even 5 days to watch the cricket. I'm still thinking Lee would appreciate the versatility of the black shirt...

Ok, I'll admit - black (or blue or grey) would be a more versatile fashion choice than green and gold. But Lee could wwear either with jeans and still look good. (Ok, he does look better in black than green)

Let's be honest: It's Lee. Lee just looks good, no matter what he's wearing. I'm not saying that he would necessarily be swoon-worthy in chicken suit, but just because he's Lee, he'd still wear that chicken suit better than anybody else. He's just that cool. |

learjet- that's how closely I looked!!! that's funny! I'd rather Lee dress as a springbok than an all black Whooo jestress, the only thing Lee is not swoonworthy in is his hobo look in 3 faces of Emily! I agree.. everything works for the man.. I do like the white collar in contrast to the rest of his rugby top - and it just gives him an air of being sporty which is always a plus!
