Every now and then I come across a news item that I think sounds like a plot-line that could have happened SMK. We tend to see SMK has a slightly ridiculous, over-the-top take on the world of spies and espionage. But I am willing to bet that over the decades since the 1950's there's many a real life events that remind us that SMK plots are maybe not so unlikely as we might imagine. (I'm not talking about SMK's gaping plot holes and inconsistencies here, just the overall story lines, plots, themes or premises.)
The Alexander Litvinenko case is one that seems so outrageous it should be fiction, but it's not... it's real.
I also remember last year, I think, reading about a spy swap that took place on a bridge - shades of an SMK episode.
Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
So this is a thread for posting any real life spy/espionage news story you might come across that could just as easily be a theme, premise, element or plot for an SMK episode.
I am also rather hoping that any info that gets posted in this thread might inspire our talented SMK fanfic writers out there.
Litvinenko Enquiry There is an interesting video in this BBC report as well.

Whoooo cool thread idea Kiwismh! I just heard about this enquiry.. Maybe there's a triumvirate in Russia... and VP is a member? AL is a hero- I do hope he is remembered as such.. a brave guy. Poor Millennium hotel.. I wonder if anyone drinks green tea there now?! It's probably become one of those macabre things where you can get a t shirt saying I drank Green Tea at the Millennium and survived.. ahem.. I'll keep my eye out - this is like crowdsourcing plots.. I can't write fan fic.. haven't got the head for it.. but.. this I can do! bye all and have a great day/evening!

Apparently I am indeed quite well suited to be involved in MI-5. (But I suspect mainly in analysing data rather than the other stuff )

Seems a lot of the spying these days - both professional and amateur - is happening via computer hacks. How boring when SMK provided so many crazy scenarios and zany antics. I guess there's still a need for actual human spies to do some legwork. I read once that the best spies aren't good looking or someone you would like twice at in the street. (Lee is just too good looking to be a really effective spy!) The most plain, mundane looking people do best apparently. Hmmmm, maybe there's an opportunity for me. Still, the long hours, danger, and constant spectre of an early and messy death aren't particularly exciting.
