Hi - this is my first post. SMK was one of my favorite shows in my early teens and I've rediscovered it with my daughter. There are lots of things I'd love to discuss including episode order and how much I love the "Just Walk With Me" blog.
I'd also love to discuss some things that irk me about the show - coming from a place of love and humor - if people are into that as well. For example, KJ's hair in some of the episodes drives me insane. I know it was the 80's but she is beautiful and it just looks so bad sometimes. I think her best look was in the first season and in ALLA when they made it look like her hair wasn't done at all. I also still feel disappointed at how the show was ended, and find the mystery marriage and the idea that two people in love in their mid-30's would feel the need to wait for marriage completely beyond my capacity to understand. My last gripe is how during the end of the third season and the entire fourth a lot of what made the show so charming was stripped out. I got that the characters had grown but I wish that there was a way to retain all of that cuteness at the same time. All this griping aside, I obviously still love the show and have spent a silly amount of time thinking about these things.
I love the spy/mystery genre and find this adaptation of it completely relaxing. I can't wait for homeland to come back but I don't think I'd ever watch an entire episode over again. Whereas, I watch SMK episodes to relax.
Anyone else wish that there was a remake of this show?

Welcome to Neds, gailgirl . I assume you're Gail from JWWM?? Regarding the hair, have a look at iwsod's meme on the meme thread page 70 where I make my opinions known about KJs hair. I like the S1 hair the most (esp the updo) and the very stiff, bushy hairdo of early S4 the least. (I love KJ's hair from the Charlie's Angels and the Rookies days. I think it really shows off her great bone structure). And don't get me started on the hair don't at the end of S2 . I've done a post on Amanda's S1 and S2 clothes and 'look' which is coming up in the next few weeks on JWWM (when we need a bit of a break from Francine and PFK!) As for waiting for marriage....I think that's been debated at length with some fanfic writers saying they waited, and others that they didn't. I'm not sure that we can tell either way. But one of things I love about SMK is how squeaky clean and less-is-more it is regarding the bedroom AKA backgammon, and how unviolent SMK 'violence' is. It's just so relaxing. Plus you can watch it with your daughter without having to go into intricate explanations. Both of my daughters have watched it on and off with me. They seem more interested in Jamie than Lee though....! I think that from mid-S3, episode quality varies wildly. But I also think that some of the best episodes are in S4 (The Stemwinders and Bad Timing are big favourites for me). And I have a few unusual favourites in S4 - including "Any Number Can Play" (lots of Dotty!) and "It's in the Water" (not sure why - maybe it's the university setting or the foreshadowing of the proposal). I do miss all the humour of S1 and S2 though

Same Gail as on JWWM.
Thanks for sending me in the right direction Learjet. I agree about the hair although I pretty much discount all of the last episodes of S4 on all counts. Actually, it's not the worst in those last episodes which is saying something about how bad some of the early S4 episodes were. IMO, worse that even the sort hair which wasn't particularly flattering but at least appeared soft. I know that was the style but - ugh.
I also love the squeaky cleanness and easiness of the show. And, I guess that it was left a little vague. There's very little on tv that I can actually enjoy with my daughter. I do let her watch Modern Family but some of it is a bit racy for her. She does cover her face anytime Amanda and Lee shared a kiss. She talks a good game but then she's can't watch a kiss - makes me smile.
I agree with all of your assessment of S4 too - I love Billy's lost weekend. S4 seems to have swapped the humor for angst and relationship payoff.

Hi, @gail! I totally agree with you guys on the hair! The short cut in season 2 is the one that really annoys me, and in Odds on a Dead Pigeon, we had to see twice as much of it! I think the humor in the show is important, too, and the first two seasons are my favorite, although there are a few season 3 episodes that I particularly enjoy. You know, I heard somewhere (and I think someone was talking about it here but I can't remember who or when) that KJ was talking about a possible continuation of the show, but I don't know if that was serious or just speculation. The tv show Castle kind of reminds me of SMK, although I like the earlier seasons better than the later ones. learjet, I do like it that your girls are more interested in Jamie than Lee. It makes sense that they'd go for someone close to their own age. If they also favor Jamie over Philip, it's a good sign because I think Philip is more brawn and Jamie is more brain. I think it's good for girls to like smart guys.

The minijets don't even remember Phillip's name, as I think I mentioned at JWWM before . I'm a bit biased towards Jamie and against Phillip but I'd say - brains vs brattiness in the case of Jamie vs Phillip. Is it with one 'l' or two? Depends where you look online...

I'm not sure of the spelling, either. It's kind of like with Mrs. Marsten's name (or is it Marston or Marsden?). I've seen different spellings of that, too. And yeah, Philip is kind of a pain. I think he thinks he's acting tough sometimes, but he's really being kind of a brat toward his brother.

Welcome to Ned's Gail!
Did you find the other threads about all of the topics you would like to discuss. I think we have a thread for everything here and if you don't find it we would all be happy if you went ahead and started one.
I try to look at the hair don't in season 2 as a part of Amanda's character development. Not sure what to do with her hair in season 4. I haven't looked closely at season 4 in a long time.
There is something special about the relationship that develops between Lee and Amanda in SMK. It is more than squeaky cleanness, I think. There is a quality to it that I don't know if I have seen portrayed in many other shows. I think that is what draws me most.

I would say this irks but actually this particular quirk of SMK writing always makes me laugh out loud because of the sheer silliness of it, and it's that they so often have Lee bury the lead in a post-commercial update. Let me give you my favourite example from Odds on a Dead Pigeon. Lee returns to the Agency after being almost killed by Karen's boobytrap at Amanda's house and starts his conversation with Billy and Francine about how something has happened to Amanda and he can tell because the house is a mess and the dishes aren't done and there's open booze on the table and overflowing ashtrays and then when they try to convince him he's crazy and that she's just away for the weekend with Junior Trailblazer, that's when he finally mentions in passing that there had also been a shotgun set up to kill him as he came in the front door. (OMG that was an Amanada worthy run on sentence). But seriously, wouldn't you start with that? "Billy, someone just tried to kill me at Amanda;s house and I think she may be in trouble". Another one was in Relative Situation where they come back from commercial after Lee has crashed his car chasing the guys who have JUST KIDNAPPED HIS UNCLE and the first thing out of his mouth is "I can;t believe it. I've had that car back from the shop less than one day!". Yes Lee, we get you have conflicted feelings about the man who raised you but really?

sara - this is for you because I didn't know where else to post it, and didn't want to respond at JWWM. You mentioned your statistical tangle: just remember - you are not alone in enjoying (or should I say enduring!) the dubious pleasures of postgraduate study. Several of us at JWWM have either been there or are still going through it. I spent most of the last month before submitting my thesis either working on my thesis, watching SMK or eating. (I don't think I slept much - I was too wound up!)
