Hey iwsod did you notice Sharon Gless in the Golden Globes awards? A SMK/BN crossover moment I take a few lessons from this: 1. Black or white dresses were the norm. Amanda wasn't unusual in her evening gown "choices". In fact those midnight blue gowns were quite out there for the time 2. Fish scales were clearly a huge inspiration for the clothing "designers" 3. Some of Francine's outfits and hairdos are looking quite tasteful in comparison those in the socalled fashion show 4. It's a pity that people didn't stick to black and white, because the gowns of other colours are so horrific And about KJ: 1) Amanda was onto a winner with Lee (WRT looks). While KJ.... 2) She chose to wear ear buttons IN RL? ! 3) She chose to wear fish scales over a discreet and flattering black dress? ! I did enjoy seeing all the stars after the cheesy circus intro - reminded me of lots of shows I haven't thought about for many, many years. KJ looks a bit embarrassed... As preserver of the dignity of music everywhere, I strongly object to the elevator mush that they played during the fashion show - it does not deserve to be called music.

Hey iwsod's, you really are a detective! And you Know what I can also not get this Joan Rivers interview out of my head and I think I found two evidences that it must have taken place in 1985. Firstly she was talking about this Bruce Springsteen concert she visited recently and sie was telling the same thing in an interview dated November 1985; it is the one she is wearing red, ralx entered a screenshot in her initial post. I think she would not have Said "recently" or "the other day" if one year would have been inbetween those interviews. And secondly she was talking with Joan about Dating and she will have Dinner with someone tonight. The German Wikipedia articel says that she got divorced in December 1984. If this is true I don't think she would have talked about Dating and seeing someone already in October 1984. But weird that she said it is her 36 Birthday. Maybe she forgot how old she is. I sometimes forget it, because time is flying by so quickly and I cannot believe that I am already that old!

It was worth the 10 minutes to watch those vids hey learjet! glad you enjoyed them!
Yeah very true - there was lots of black and white.. I did fleetingly think ohhh it's not just Amanda wearing lots of white! and.. Mary McFadden is in all white also
Lots of glittery metals going on too..but the hair!!! ohh hilarious!!! Susan Lucci's hair looked bigger than her body!!!! I think maybe the 80s is to blame for the whole in the ozone layer.. thank goodness the hair sizes came down or Australia would have toasted by now!
Hey Learjet, what did you mean by this line: "1) Amanda was onto a winner with Lee (WRT looks). While KJ...." sorry I'm confused.. WRT? what does that mean? sorry!! I'm guessing it's obvious and I should know but I don't !!
I went back and had a listen to the music and yep hilarious!!! like a corrupted version of some fabulous classics!!! eek!!

iwsod: wrt = with regard to. I was commenting on Lee vs her partner in RL, but trying unsuccessfully to be tactful (but landed up being merely obscure ). Did you notice that some of those shoulder pads were bigger than their, um, assets?

I sometimes forget it, because time is flying by so quickly and I cannot believe that I am already that old! Wow Mara that's fantastic detective work!!!! wow.. great catch on the BS concert being mentioned in the two interviews.. btw- that hour magazine interview was interesting- was it that one where she says that Season 3 sees the characters really developing and how Amanda King is no longer so silly? that's almost KJ's exact words.. so everyone - if you haven't watched the interview I recommend it!
good catch on the dating!! It does seem like there were quite a few changes going on around 84/95/86 which can help us distinguish. I'm going to put this JR interview down in my sMK calendar as 1985 now!! I think you've nailed it!!!
Maybe the reference to her 36th birthday was correct - and it's the sources now that we read her birthday on now that are wrong? it's possible.. and it seems strange kj would shave a year off when JR says Ohhh you are actually being honest about your age- she had checked her year date.. interesting!
I wonder if that first Joan Rivers appearance in Grey is on the Johnny Carson show with JR hosting? AHA!! I think that's what it is.. IMDB has Kate Jackson appearing on his show dated 29 October 1985 - which all fits really well. And IMDB has Joan Rivers listed as the Guest Host for that night- hooray!!!! I think we can well and truly put this one to bed!!.. though would love to know more about the JR interview.. I guess this confirms for us Oct 29 is JK's birthday.. but not necessarily the year.. anyway..
Without it meaning to, this thread has become a place to collect KJ interviews!
I may as well post this here: Here is the JK appearance with Joan Rivers from 1986 - I think this is the Late show with Joan Rivers, which started in 1986 - but.. the youtube video is labelled '1985'!!
On tv.com they are listing it as being Oct 16, 1986. [the video is quite blurry.. but it's better than nothing!] here's a snip from the interview: [taken from this video- you can tell why this is blurry! but still you can at least make out what she is wearing -gah!!!] and here's a head and shoulders.. yes.. kj has on the heart shaped necklace!
This outfit is not exact the same.. but reminds me a lot of this Amanda outfit:
maybe it's the same designer.. Mary McFadden? [did Francine mention who the designer of this outfit was in Times they are a changing? she is a name dropper!]
Oh well anyway.. Maybe one of us should comment on youtube and mention the correct dates to tjsmklvr? I haven't seen her in the fandom for a long time.. if you are watching tjsmklvr - say hi!!! and thanks soooo much for making these KJ appearances available for us all to enjoy!!
bye!!

Yep!!! I think the shoulder pads helped the ladies to not topple over because of the weight of all that hair product on their heads!
Anyone not yet seen the Fashion show vid???
Do give it a watch when you can - HILARIOUS!!!

But, still, what I want to know... were there other actresses at that time that wore their character's clothes in real life... or vise versa? How do we find that out? Does Laura from Remignton Steele ever show up in interviews in costume? Is it just a KJ thing, or an 80's thing?

LOL Morley! I would have no idea! I may be into smk but that doesn't mean I have any knowledge of anything that was worn on another show by other stars!
Hmm.. maybe you could ask Kgmohror about it on her Remington Steele blog? she would know if SZ had done the same thing maybe?
(say hi to her from JWWM please if you contact her! I miss hearing from her!)

I've thought about a few ways of working this out, but they are all either time-consuming (cross-referencing a lot of photos) or involve emailing someone's agent and hoping for a response (does anyone have the guts to do that? I haven't!)
When I googled the question, all I could find as that taking wardrobe clothes home is not the done thing as the clothes belong to the ?studio, but maybe things were more lax back in the 80s.
When I have some time, I'll try to do some more detective work

Thanks for looking into that. If I had gobs of time, I bet I would do that cross referencing I guess if clothes belong to the studio, we might be able to conclude that KJ used a lot of her own clothes for Amanda?

I have to post this - I watched the latest episode of Doctor Who and Clara (the Doctors companion) was wearing a tie!!! At least it wasn't part of a yellow and purple outfit with paisley. And we thought that those abominations died with the 80s. (She didn't wear it in a bow like the right side photo; actually like a men's tie)

I saw an interview with BB where he said that their agents would get in their contracts that the clothes belonged to the actors, which is why I assumed that KJ wore them in other appearances.

Well, that makes sense.
Why they would want to own some of those clothes remains a mystery (but I'm sure the evening outfits and suits would have been the deciders, not the dubious jumpers and vinyl jackets).
Presumably, they could choose which clothes they kept, which might explain the tie swopping and exchanging of jumpers among Lee, Billy and guest actors? Can't ever remember any actresses wearing the same garments as each other.

I wonder if the "clothes belong to the actors" language meant that the actors got to keep the clothes that their characters wore, or that the actors furnished costumes for the characters out of their own personal closets? I agree, learjet, why would they want some of those clothes?

Good point, morley, but why would they be expected to provide their own clothes? Surely, you'd expect to be provided for clothes for work. It seems like a rough deal especially in a job that require you to 'get in character'. Even I, in my part-time job which doesn't require any kind of uniform (frankly no-one cares what we wear), try to separate my 'work clothes' from my 'non-work clothes' so I can maintain a gap between work and the rest of my life. Also wonder if BB did the crossover work/normal life with clothes.
